WHAT ELSE? – A powerful question not only for (project) coaches
The power of “what else” lies in finding alternatives and exploring new ideas.
When you need to make a decision you only think about “the one” or “the other”. But when asked “what else” all of a sudden other ideas emerge. There is also “both”, “neither nor”, “something completely different”,…….
Finding out what works already:
When you look at what is working already the question “what else” will shed a light on all the achievements you have made already and have not been aware of yet.
Finding solutions and exploring ideas:
When looking for solutions or new ideas “what else” helps you to find more.
However “what else” does not only help to explore further it also helps to get deeper. When (project) teams or individuals start with solution focused coaching they sometimes only see or only want to talk about the top of the iceberg. Asking “what else” helps them to discover what is beneath and find the solutions they REALLY need.
PS. Most of the time one “what else” is by far not enough. And when the client finally answers: “There is nothing else”, give him / her a few seconds to think.
