My motto for 2017 is “yes AND!”
I am sure you have all experienced “yes, but”:
You have a great idea, a solution to a problem or want to do something differently. You are really happy about it and full of motivation. And then you share it with a friend, your colleague, your boss or your partner and their answer is: Yes, this is a good idea, BUT…….
And all of a sudden you feel disappointed and demotivated.
offers the necessary time and space for the idea to develop and takes the idea even further. A circular “Yes AND!” conversation, where people first listen and then add their own ideas, fosters creativity and provides new solutions. Everyone within the conversation is appreciated and this leads to a very high engagement and motivation.
I had read about “yes AND!” a few times before I had the opportunity to experience it during a leadership workshop / jazz concert hosted / performed by Alex Steele at the SOL world CEE conference in October 2016. Alex told us that Jazz improvisation is based on “yes AND!”; the musicians take turns playing, make changes or even mistakes and the others play along and then add their own variations.
At this conference I also had the chance to try it out with Alina Ionescu. Alina is a business and life coach and although we did not know each other we developed many ideas within a few minutes of using “yes AND!“.
This was such a great experience that I want to do more of it.
- Whenever someone approaches me with an idea I will listen first and take it further with “yes AND!”
- When I find out about good initiatives from friends, for instance on social media, I will support those.
- I will also share my ideas with colleagues, (business) friends and family and expect them to answer with “yes AND!” (Self-fulfilling prophecies or sharing with the right people?)
- I will engage in many “yes AND!” conversations; I have just arranged a follow up with Alina Ionescu.
